Our
Vineyard / Orchard / Berry Patches

The Plantings of Squirrel Ranch

At Squirrel Ranch we not only produce wines from Grapes but also Apple and Berries.  We are working toward planting varieties that not only do well in our southern Ohio climate, but also make wines that are recognized and marketable

Currently we are only cultivating Raspberries and Blackberries for production of single variety wine as well as blended wines.  In the future we are planning on expanding our berry patches to include Black Raspberries, Blueberries,  and Strawberries.

We are expanding our current varieties in our vineyard and expanding other varieties to ascertain which varieties grow well in south east Ohio.  We are at an elevation of almost 900 feet above sea level and have south facing exposure.  This gives us an excellent micro climate, and offers us some protection from late frosts.  We are testing not only American and French Hybrid varieties, but also French and Italian Vinifera varieties.

Our Orchards are planted with several cultivars each of apples, peaches, pears, and quince trees.  We have several cider apples that are rare and date back to the 18th century.  One Apple (Daves) is a sport from a friends farm and grows only on his farm and ours.  We have just started to propagate this tree and there are only 6 of these trees in the world.

Fruit Information

We are nuts for Rare and Heirloom Fruits

At Squirrel Ranch we propagate most of our own plantings.  From Grapes to Apples to Berries, we root, graft, and propagate our own plants when ever we can.  From obtaining grape cuttings from our friends who have vineyards in other parts of this state as well as other states, to purchasing applewood scions to graft to rootstock we grow on our farm, we create our own plants right on the farm.  We have apple trees that only a hand full of orchards in the country grow.  Our current grape project was the purchase of several French and Italian Vinifera varieties, two of each, to be planted and used for propagation.  From these we will take cuttings next year and graft those onto rootstock we grew to create many plants to become test base in our Library Vineyard to determine the suitability in our location.
